How to Add Holiday Cheer to Your Interview Thank-You Email

How to Add Holiday Cheer to Your Interview Thank-You Email How to Add Holiday Cheer to Your Professional Thank-You NotesHeres the right way to infuse your post-interview thank-you note with holiday cheer while remaining professional. If youre in the process of fielding job interviews as you simultaneously prepare for the holidays, congratulations Youve got a head start on your fellow job seekers find a new job resolution for the New Year. As you move forward in the interview process, here are some guidelines to help you spread a little holiday cheer via a professional holiday message a great way to be in the holiday spirit without compromising your professional brand.Steer clear of religious connotations. If you recently engaged in an interview with an individual hiring manager or search committee, its highly unlikely that you delved into one anothers personal belief systems. With the exception of possible future colleagues whose profession is faith-based, it is safe to say that assum ptions are not your best bet when drafting those interview thank-you notes and emails.Keep it festive, yet secular.Focusing on non-religious holidays is a viable option when sending thanks after a job interview. When you include Best wishes for a happy New Year in your message, it shows that youre enjoying the season and encouraging others to do the same. It also allows you to deliver a positive, professional holiday message and sentiment without referring to Christmas, Hanukkah, and the like.Be jovial, sans mention of holidays.Who doesnt enjoy an optimistic and sunny greeting from someone they just interviewed? If youre sending out thank-you notes during the holiday season and want to steer clear of ALL holiday mentions without seeming like a Grinch, there are kindhearted and non-specific methods for achieving this. Some possible examples include Wishing you the best this holiday season, Warmest of winter wishes to you, Celebrate the joys of the season and the standard Happy Holida ysRelatedThe Professionals Guide to Job Seeking During the HolidaysUse clean, professional-looking stationery and email templates. This recommendation is true of any time of the year, but especially applies during seasonal holidays. The tone of your message is one you ultimately decide upon, but I advise against using holiday-themed cards or email templates. Maintaining your personal brand and keeping notes clean, modern, and professional is key. Those little snowmen on the cards from your family and friends may seem irresistible, but if youre hoping to be taken seriously by an employer, cute or artsy isnt the aesthetic to strive for. The content of your message can be celebratory and happy, but the visual appearance of your thank-you notes and emails should reflect that of a serious professional.Dont get too swept up in your personal holiday preparationsIf a hiring manager asks for something after an interview, e.g. a reference list or career biography, remember to include that alon g with the thank-you note. The events of the season may monopolize your time, but keeping your job search and related follow-up on track is important. Maintain a paper or electronic calendar or list of reminders to help keep things straight. The one exception to the rules. If youre applying to work within a faith-based institution, such as a church, faith-based child care center, parochial school, spiritual social service provider, worship-affiliated nonprofit, seminary, or other religious institutions of higher education, that is the exception to the aforementioned rules. Feel more than free to acknowledge a holiday you may have in common with an organization with whom you interviewed. If youre applying to a role with an organization rooted in religious practice or belief, sending a specified holiday thank-you message can go a long way. This applies whether you share in the organizations beliefs or not. You dont have to celebrate the same holidays as a potential employer to demonstra te respect for the traditions that make up their organizational foundation.Click on the following link for more interview advice.Need help with your resume for the New Year? Its Time to Fortify your Staffing Firms Cybersecurity

Its Time to Fortify your Staffing Firms CybersecurityIts Time to Fortify your Staffing Firms CybersecurityIts Time to Fortify your Staffing Firms Cybersecurity RossheimAs a staffing firm executive, all of your energies are focused on matching clients with great talent. But then the unnerving news headlines catch your eye ransomware attacks like Mays WannaCry and Junes Petya hit thousands of organizations, with direct and indirect costs often reaching six or seven figures per company.Unfortunately, most businesses, regardless of industry, are hit by one sort of cyberattack or another. Not surprisingly, the threat has increased demand for cybersecurity hiring.Where do you begin to build cybersecurity for your staffing company? And how can you enhance your existing measures against the advancing threat? Here are some guiding principles to protect your staffing company.Recognize that your staffing firm holds sensitive data. In addition to internal company data, your firms strategic aspla tzsets include confidential data on both client companies and job candidates. Bad actors may be tempted to try to steal that data and exploit it for any number of purposes. You can tell a lot about a person from their resume, says Darren Hayes, director of cybersecurity and an assistant professor at Pace University in New York. You may find their email address, Social Security number, skills set.Be aware that staffing firms are very vulnerable to a cyberattack. Sectors such as financial services and government are widely recognized as targets of cyber criminals the staffing industry not so much. This has led to woeful unpreparedness for the ever-morphing cyber threats. Its a challenge for staffing firms just to be able to track the assets they provide to staff, the information stored on laptops or phones, to make sure its secure and is retained by the staffing firm, even when workers leave the company, says Christopher Roach, national IT practice leader for CBIZ Inc.s Risk Advisory S ervices.Dont assume that your IT folks have got you covered. Your technologists have demands coming at them from every direction.Even the technical specialists responsible for security are likely spread too thin to fully comprehend and appreciate the new threats to digital organizations, says a report from trade group CompTIA.Its up to your top management to give IT the resources required to make information security a top priority. For starters, make sure backups are happening, says Roach.Dont assume your workers are acting prudently with every keystroke. Employee cybersecurityliteracy in safe practices should be a key element of your cybersecurity strategy, but its not enough.More than three-quarters of users who said they understood the risks of clicking on links in emails clicked on them anyway, according to a research summary by security vendor Barkly. Be sure employees know how to respond to suspect emails.Bring in an outside expert to assess your cybersecurity. At larger firm s with multiple offices, it makes sense to bring someone in to do a vulnerability assessment, says Roach. The best kind of security protection is help from the outside, says Hayes. Outside providers can give you betterphishing protection. Internal network people tend to think cyber threats dont apply to them.Demand proof of all of your vendors security measures. If your agency is like most, you share data with vendors and may even have given them access to some of your internal systems. Beware.Staffing firms need to vet any vendors they use for information security, says Roach. With cloud-based applications, ask for a detailed explanation of security measures before you buy.Counter your agencys potential role as a third party to a hack. Your firms liabilities for exposed data may go beyond your clients and candidates.Analyzing stolen resume data, hackers can easily learn what kinds of systems candidates were working on at previous employers, which can enable them to identify potenti al vulnerabilities at those companies, according to Roach. Attackers like to go to third parties to find vulnerabilities, he says.Keep up with emerging security threats. Last years cyber threats, and even yesterdays, may not top the list of newfangled hacks that your organization should prepare for. Witness WannaCry and other ransomware attacks of 2017. Ransomware is a threat that can really stop your business unless youre prepared to respond, says Roach.Budget for ongoing employee security training. Do your employees know what company rules say about BYOD security? Laptops brought home? Apps brought in to work? Make sure they do.A key vulnerability is the employee who doesnt know the companys acceptable use policy, says Roach. More and more companies are extending training efforts to the overall workforce, the CompTIA report says.Treat cybersecurity as an investment. Cyber threats are so numerous and varied that its not possible for any one firm to fully address them all. You can o verspend on cybersecurity, Roach says. Theres a diminishing rate of return. So we try to set a baseline, but then the company has to own it.Its wise to retain a consultant to periodically recheck the companys systems, policies and practices for vulnerabilities.

In fact, Glassdoor research announced today shows that our give to get model, which requires that a user contributes content to Glassdoor in order to gain access to our information on companies, leads to more balanced ratings and reviews. When users are prompted to leave a review to fully enjoy Glassdoor, this draws in more moderate contributors than just those who would voluntarily offer one. In fact, when we look across all reviews published on Glassdoor, 73 percent of employees say they are ok or satisfied with their jobs and companies. Why Work-Life Balance Doesnt Make Sense - The Muse

Why Work-Life Balance Doesnt Make Sense - The MuseWhy Work-Life Balance Doesnt Make Sense People talk about work-life balance as if achieving it is the precious key to happiness. Tips and tricks abound. But there are two big problems with this supposed golden ticket. First, the very phrase suggests that work isnt part of your life, its separate. Yet your career probably takes up a huge amount of your waking hours, so how could it leid be an integral part of your life? The second issue is that balance is elusive and rarely attainable. At its core, the act of balancing is both inflexible and delicate, but life requires flexibility. So on your quest for happiness, success, and fulfillment, theres actually another B word you should get excited about. That word is boundaries. Develop a boundary-setting practice, and youll wonder why anyone is still talking about work-life balance. Its fine to value stability, but since life isnt still, putting balance on a pedestal is problematic. Think of all the moving parts in a given week big meetings, work travel, doctors appointments, family events, internet outages, a co-worker quitting, another one getting promoted, a lost Uber driver on the way to the networking event. Life, as you know, throws curveballs- like when your boss gets feedback from the client that he needs to push a deadline up and all of a sudden your planned 6 PM departure goes out the window, and instead of going to your favorite boxing class, you work late and pass out at 2 AM. On that kind of unpredictable day, its pretty hard to feel good about the whole work-life balance thing. You can, however, feel good about boundaries, which put you in the drivers seat with the understanding that stuff happens and wont always go as planned. You can regularly reconfigure how your day and week is going to play out based on professional responsibilities and personal needs and not freak out if one day is all work and zero play. Here are three ways to ditch balance and emb race boundaries1. Set Your Boundaries Daily Based on Your PrioritiesThe amount of time or effort youre willing to put into a work day, planning a friends engagement party, or blogging will change based on what each day looks like. If your boyfriends 30th birthday involves you pulling off a surprise party with all his friends, youre probably not going to volunteer for a time-sensitive work project. If youre in the middle of putting together a conference, youre probably not going to double your volunteer hours. When you learn to set boundaries based on your various priorities and obligations, youll feel in control and at liberty to make decisions that work for you and the kind of life you want to lead- not the kind of life youre supposed to lead. 2. Practice Establishing Your Boundaries With OthersLet people know what youre up to. Tell your colleagues and friends why youre doing away with the idea of work-life balance and explain how your boundaries mean you cant meet for happy hour a s frequently as you used to. Up for a promotion? Speak to your significant other about working a few late nights while the higher ups are making a decision on your advancement. By sharing some details of your boundary practice with the people in your life, you give them an opportunity to support your goals instead of constantly tempting you with invitations that threaten to step on the lines youve drawn. 3. Understand Your Boundaries by Failing FirstSometimes you have to slip up to learn about your boundaries redefining them is a part of the process. Pushing yourself too hard, or underestimating how long something takes will help you draw better, clearer lines in the future. Lets say youre having a relatively busy week at work, but its important for you to make time for friends and get in a long bike ride. Even though you think the way youve planned it makes sense, you end up sacrificing sleep, which leads to a longer day at the office because youre unfocused and easily distracted. That leads to bailing on dinner and drinks. Dont stress over the change of plans- just know that next week, youll tweak your boundaries. Correctly identifying what you need under the circumstances to comfortably achieve your goals takes some time.So go ahead and give yourself permission to set balance aside and instead start drawing some lines. Each week will look a little different, and not all of the lines are going to be straight. Youll be surprised at how much control and comfort you find when you stop trying to achieve the impossible work-life balance. Photo of man on phone courtesy of Caiaimage/Sam Edwards/Getty Images.
